Green Plan 2030
To transition from fossil fuels to cleaner energy across ALL sectors
How do other clean energy options fare?
Wind 💨
Turbines require wind speeds >4.5m/s but our average wind speed is only 2m/s.
Hydroelectric 🌊
Narrow tidal range, calm seas, and the absence of a fast-flowing river limits power generation. Our sea is also mostly occupied by port infrastructure.
Geothermal 🔥
There are no geothermal energy sources present in Singapore.
Nuclear/Biomass ☢️
Singapore's small size (733 km²), high population density, and land scarcity renders sustainable biomass growth and safe nuclear power deployment unfeasible.
Why solar power?
👍 Strengths:
High average annual solar irradiation (~1580 kWh/m²)
👎 Limitations:
- Limited space for PV deployment
- Monsoon season causes thick cloud cover
- High humidity, contributing to intermittency
Why photovoltaics?
Leverage off existing rooftop infrastructures:
- HDB Flats
- Residential Carparks
- Schools
- Community Centres
Financial incentives:
- Rapidly dropping cost of silicon
- More affordable crystalline PV
