How PV cells work

  1. Convert sunlight to electricity
  2. 1-2 watts of power per cell
  3. Made of thin semiconductor materials
  4. Sandwiched by glass/plastic

Types of cells

There are three main types of PV cells (Energy Education, last accessed 27 May 2023):

  • Monocrystalline silicon
  • Polycrystalline silicon
  • Thin film

Role of PV cells in Singapore

Singapore is taking steps towards achieving its Green Plan 2030, which aims to promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions. One of the key initiatives under this plan is the adoption of solar energy as a renewable energy source, with a target of producing 2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of solar energy by 2030.
